Artist Statement

I love creating portraits that say something about the person in them. This is why I love photographing the people that I love, and know best, because I have an understanding of them as a person, and through photography, can convey how I see them. I also love making people feel beautiful through photography. A beautiful portrait of a person has the potential to give them a huge boost of confidence, and I love helping people to see their beauty, and potential through my art.
My main focus is in individual, and family portraiture, and because of this, many of my photos do not get seen by people other than my clients, their close family and their friends. A friend once asked me if I was sad that so many of my portraits do not hang in galleries and museums. My answer to him was simple; the walls in the homes of my clients are my museum, and to me, that is an even more intimate, and special setting for my work to be seen.
I have an extreme appreciation for the field of film photography. Though I primarily work in digital, I find that the processes of dodging and burning used in the darkroom effect the way that I think while working in photoshop. That being said, I love the fact that digital photography, unlike film, can be manipulated so easily. I strive to create a surreal feeling through some of my personal, artistic portraits. To create this feeling, I use a variety of technical features both in camera, and through post processing my images. I think that having the opportunity to alter my images through Photoshop, or other various post processing software, gives me more room to be creative with my photographs. I don’t have to settle with the images that my eyes see in real life. I can alter my real life images into anything that my mind can dream up.
